When i visited, I wanted to see if i could not only dip into the Icy Baltic Sea, but manage to find the resilience and bravery to swim a minimum of 10 swim strokes, ( i know an arbitrary number I am not sure why it was 10 ) watched by the Helsinki Locals ( judging by their accents ) in a triumphant slice of shared humanity— I managed by first Baltic Sea swim, having conducted many North sea swims off the coast of Northumberland and Scotland, the Baltic Sea was next on my Swim Bucket List. With no words needed, just a universal gesture of respect and acknowledgment. I got a big thumbs up from the fellow intrepid Sea inhabitants. Taking on the Baltic Sea’s icy embrace is a feat in itself.
For those new to this tradition, don’t worry—Löyly’s design allows for easy sea access, making it beginner-friendly yet still utterly authentic.
The next day on my Trip to Helsinki, and emboldened by the previous day's short swim in the Baltic Sea, I was intrigued on my walk back to my accommodation to see a couple swimming in a nearby bay in the distance, i tentatively walked up to them, on closer inspection the Woman was very heavily pregnant and her male companion was very gallantly escorting her into the water holding hands they entered and existed the water, I didn't have my swimming costume with me that day... and made a future mental note always to pack a minimum 2 Swim suits while travelling, but arranged to meet up at the same time of the morning to swim with them again the next day, the swim was just as bracing as my previous incursion into the Baltic Sea, but i knew i could at least manage a short swim this time, the couple very generously kept watch and acted as my 'Spotters' after a short conversation, we went our separate ways, i was elated by my first proper swim in the Baltic Sea and the beautiful chilly after glow... and by the kindness of the strangers in Helsinki who watched out for me.
